Let’s face it, projects are everywhere and they take up a large amount of our time, whether in the office or at home. Some projects are fun and exciting, others are dreaded and worrisome but all of them serve a purpose. Projects will not go away so there is no point in trying to ignore them. But we can learn to manage them effectively and achieve our goals with minimal discomfort and we might even have some fun while we are at it.
Project Management is a tool, an art, a science and a role. It is a tool (more aptly a collection of tools) that allows us to meet our goals, within budgetary and time constraints. It is an art because it requires finesse and skill to develop the right synergy amongst the resources (human and otherwise) that are needed to meet our goals. It is a science as is evidenced by the vast array of materials devoted to the ‘how to’ of project management. Finally, it is a role- the project manager works with a team of project experts; the project manager tends to the structural details of the project and ensures that the project team maintains focus, direction and enthusiasm.
